DEMETER HOUSE DESCRIPTION

The Demeter House is a residential substance abuse center for women in the greater Washington DC area. We aid women in addiction recovery from alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, narcotics, and other dangerous substances.

One unique feature of our house is we treat substance abuse and provide childcare, allowing mothers to recover without having to worry about their children. The Demeter house only serves 16 women at a time so, addiction counseling is given in a comfortable homelike atmosphere— while women are receiving addiction treatment, they are also caring for their children or learning how to.  The program is designed to not only break the cycle of addiction, but empower women to re-enter the community as responsible citizens. To meet the special needs of women, alcohol and drug treatment is comprehensive and based on a disease model approach.

Typically, treatment runs about three months, though length of stay is based on an individual's own progress and condition. Our certified counselors employ a traditional 12-step model based on Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous as well as individual and group counseling.

Addiction counseling is behavior management-focused; each woman learns how to assume personal responsibility for her addiction recovery.

Our program also addresses the social and family barriers that have traditionally prevented mothers from entering or remaining in treatment. Up to two children, ages 12 and younger, can live with their mother while as she learns to cope with alcoholism or drug addiction.

Family services

Supervised childcare is provided while mothers participate in addiction treatment activities—all other times, children are in the care of their mothers.

The program also offers a comprehensive array of services and support to help female clients achieve long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Among the services are resume writing workshops, individual tutoring, workshops in personal/home budgeting, nutrition and meal planning and other life skills.
